Mr.A.Georgiadis, High school maths teacher and ecologist, showed the young pupils how to recycle and talked about the benefits of compost making.

This morning there was a book presentation at the premises of A primary school
where three classes (from nursery to B) attended and participated in the activities that followed the reading.

The writer showed the pupils the illustrations of the story on the school projector and then they all drew and painted snails on the photocopies provided.

They were about 40 pupils participating, from 4 to 7 .

We are grateful to the teachers for their kind support and their enthusiasm and hope this activity will take place in more schools all over the island and maybe ...on the mainland schools too!

On the 2 March 2011 THE WHITE SNAIL storybook was presented to the young readers of B primary school at the Public library(old castle).

The kids listened to the story read by the actress Alexandra Pagiataki and then drew and painted snails in the kids reading room. At the end of the activity the writer gave away snail cards and real snail shells.

The next reading of THE WHITE SNAIL will take place on the 9 March at the A Primary school.

This month is ideal for some fresh air outings to the wonderful wildlife resorts of the island.

Last Sunday I visited Bioporos, an area on the south of Corfu, at Korission lake. The view was amazing, the eco farm was ecxellent as well as the fresh food they prepare for their visitors. This place is ideal for a vacation all the year round. Visitors can walk around the farm, walk up to the lake and then enjoy the meals at the farm restaurant. There is a lot to see, from local exhibits in the small museum, to wildlife species.

Fig Jam

I was about five and my sister, Kate , was fourteen. I was a
constant nuisance to her and she always had to hide her personal
things such as books and candies from me. Sometimes I was good
enough to track them down and place them elsewhere , to Kate’s
outmost dismay of course!
Our mom used to take my side:

“She’s only a baby, don’t be mean!” she would say to furious
Kate.

But Kate was adamant.

“If she does that again I’ll beat her up!”

To tell you the truth, I was a bit afraid of her, as she was
tall, fat and strong, while I was so thin and frail. I dared not
confront her when mom was not around. She knew that and she
called me ‘coward’ . We were in a constant battle. However, I
was not always the winner. There were times when mom lost her
patience with me and just screamed:

“Be quiet, don’t touch her books, hear me?” Then I was nice and
polite.

But the next moment I had he chance to discover a new treasure,
I forgot all about good manners and I was back in messing Kate’s
belongings up.

Sometimes though, Kate was really nice to me. I did not
understand why, just took it for granted . Just like the day mom
made her best-loved fig jam.

I forgot to mention that Kate was an avid food lover, and she
had a sweet tooth as well. August is the month of ripe figs in
Greece. Every year mom used to buy a large amount of figs and
made the family’s favorite dessert: fig jam.

I was not interested in this jam, not in any other jam in the
world, but Kate was . She was actually a great fan of mom’s
cooking endeavors. She smelt the aroma of the freshly made jam
and tried to locate the cupboard mom stored the jars.

“Don’t you dare touch the jam!” Mom warned Kate. “It’s for the
winter. ” But she gave her just a little jar to comfort her.

“This will do for the time being!” mom said.

Kate sighed but she had to obey. The small jar was soon empty
and Kate tried to find a way to get some more.

One morning, while mom was in the garden, Kate found what she
was looking for: the key to the secret cupboard where all the
jam jars were kept. She had already unlocked the cupboard door
and was taking the lid off one jar when I walked in looking for
mom. I saw her and was ready to say something, but she whispered
:

“Go away, right now!”

I did not. “What are you doing” I asked her foolishly, as it was
obvious what she was doing!

“Trying this jam, silly. I’m testing it to see if it’s the same
as the one mom ’s given me.” She said shoving a big spoonful
into her mouth.

“Mom said you shouldn’t touch it,” I said.

“Just a little bit won’t do ant harm,” Kate replied, diving her
spoon into the jar once more.

“I’ll tell mom,” I said and was ready to leave.

“Wait!” she screamed. “Try this!” She forced a spoonful into my
mouth. “Let’s have a secret, shall we?” she said.

“I don’t like jam!” I mumbled with my mouth full.

Just then we heard footsteps. Kate wiped the jam from my mouth,
closed the cupboard hurriedly and shoved me behind the green
velvet curtains of the living room.

“Stay there and don’t talk!” she ordered.

I couldn’t talk anyway with my mouth full of fig jam. I had to
swallow it first.

“What are you doing over there?” mom’s voice sounded loudly in
my ears.

“I’m looking for Lia, ” Kate replied. “Maybe she’s in the
garden,” she added.

“She’s not,” mom replied concerned. “Lia!” she started shouting.

I had finally managed to swallow the sticky jam and replied:

“Here I am , mom!” and I emerged from the curtain.

“What are you doing there?” mom asked.

Kate gave me an angry look.

“I’m hiding,” I confessed. “We were playing hide and seek,” Kate
added.

Mom stared at both of us and then shook her head.

A few days later, the secret was revealed. It was not my fault.
Mom found out the half-eaten fig jam and Kate had to confess her
crime, or her good deed.

“Lia wanted some jam so I thought you wouldn’t mind,” she
defended herself.

Mom was surprised.

“I didn’t know you liked my fig jam!” she told me. “I’m glad you
do! It’s very healthy and nutritious!”

So, from that day on, I had to eat a slice of bread with fig jam
at breakfast. At the beginning, I felt sick of it, but a little
by little I got used to it , and, funnily enough, I started
liking it. I still do!

Viros Art Display

It was announced this morning that the Art Display will stay open till Sunday 1st November.

So, if you have missed the display, drive to Viros and have a look!

The display started on the 24th October. A lot of people attended this event, among them the Prefect of Corfu, Mr.Poulimenos, and Mr.Charalampous.

Art event IN CORFU

AT TENEDOS GALLERY...

Last evening I attended the opening of the Painting and Photography exhibition at TENEDOS gallery in Corfu town.

The even was a big success! There were so many people there that they had to get inside in turns to see the exhibits.

The painter, Giorgio Turchetti, displayed both conventional and abstract art in oils, acrylics and crayons, showing his expertise in all mediums.

The photographer, Christos Koulouris, displayed a fantastic range of artwork that stimulate imagination and stir up the inquisitive mind.

More on this event later on, along with the interviews of the artists (which I hope to get!).

This picture shows three of the paintings of Giorgio Turchetti.

If you happen to be on the island, pop in to see this display, you won't miss! The Gallery is located at the old port of the town and
within easy reach of the center-everything is nearby.

AGIS XOMERITAKIS, the well known Corfiot painter, was there too.

Painting and Photography exhibition

On Wednesday, at 20:30, let's visit TENEDOS, the new Art Gallery in Corfu town!

There we'll have the opportunity to admire the paintings of the well known Italian painter Giorgio Turchetti who spends much of his time on the island. Apart from his paintings the visitor will see the wonderful photo art of the the Corfiot photographer, Christos Koulouris.

The event will take place in Tenedos Gallery at the old port of Corfu town and the exhibition will be open from 9 till 18 September. Don't miss it!

Corfiot olive trees

The island of Corfu (Kerkyra for the Greek) lies on the tip north west border of Greece, near Italy. Among the green that covers the whole island from north to south, there are vast olive groves that are the source of its main local product: olive oil.

I use olive oil every day. My ancestors used olive oil every day, too, and they lived to an old age – some lived more than a century. So, the use of olive oil dates back to many centuries ago when the first inhabitants of the island actually lived on it. That’s why there are vast olive groves all over the island. From a distance, the visitor can only see acres of olive trees covering the whole island.

I use olive oil almost everywhere, as it not only adds a special flavor to food, but also boosts my immune system as it contains Vitamin E. Combined with vegetables and fish is an excellent food, as well as with meat of every kind for those who are meat-eaters. The best brand is the extra virgin olive oil which has less acidity. But how is olive oil extracted from olives?

A trip to the nearest olive oil refinery gave me the answer.

The refinery is in the middle of a green field, in Korakiana village, just 14 kilometers from Corfu town. It is an old building that has been renovated recently. I know the owner who lives in the village and who spent his whole life as a blacksmith and a refiner. He’s got his own olive groves and he started this refinery for his own needs. At first he used the old way to extract olive oil. He used two round mill stones that were crushing the olives as they were rotating with the help of a horse. This was replaced by a man operated device made from iron and wood, but now everything relies on the new technology.

I went into the refinery to watch the process of olive oil making. I saw a spacious room with a kind of machinery that consisted of a complex of long shiny steel tubes. It reminded me of the device in the Chocolate Factory story! At one side they emptied a sack of olives mixed with leaves. This is the raw product the villages gather in the fields. They actually spread large nets under the trees for the olives to fall on them and then they store them in sacks. This mixture went through a tube where they got sorted out by means of compressed air. Then the olives went through a long tube where they got pressed and separated from their stones. At the other end of the tube, which was a couple of meters long, the new olive oil started trickling into a pot. Then they measured the acidity of the product. If it is less than 2 degrees they use it for eating, over 2 they sell it to soap manufacturers.

The owner gets a small percentage of the extracted olive oil as payment along with a small sum. He then sells it to his customers.

I should also mention another product of the olive tree; the olives.

These are small, black and tasty olives, freshly gathered by the villagers in the Corfiot olive groves. I can’t find them all the year round though. The people gather olives when the crop is ripe enough to fall. So, local olives are available in winter and spring as well as in late autumn. I know that and I go to the local super market to get as many olives as I can store at home. I store them in clay or glass jars filled with salty water. If I want to consume them soon, I preserve some in smaller jars filled with olive oil and vinegar. In this way they can be kept fresh for a very long time.

These local olives are very tasty and very different from all the other types of Greek olives which are a lot bigger. They can be found only in big super markets on the island such as 'Demetra' markets or ‘Sconto’ markets.

Alikes Potamou

Alikes Potamou:

A popular bath resort for all the residents of Corfu that is located just a few kilometers off the town, opposite Evenos stores. There is a spacious parking lot and a well organized space filled with a number of facilities.

Those who wish to enjoy a swim along with a healthy dinner this is the ideal spot to do so! The taverna on the beach offers a variety of fresh fish like grilled sardines that are delicious! Meat eaters can have chicken chops (the specialty of the taverna) or beef steaks and/or the dish of the day which usually includes a freshly cooked casserole with seasonal ingredients. The taverna is open all day long and in the evenings too, all year round.

Prices are low-a lot lower than other places-and the quality of the food is exceptionally good. For example, the chips are made from freshly cut potatoes and the salads are being prepared on the spot. Kids can have ice cream or soft drinks and play at the garden electronic toys which are all around the taverna.

There is a small pool on the right and the tall eucalyptus trees that cast ample shade make the place cool and comfortable. There is no extra charge for the sun beds scattered all around the place or the sun umbrellas and benches. For those who wish to bring their own food and not sit at the taverna, there are many shady spots with wooden benches and tents on the left side of the taverna.

The beach is sandy and caters to kids and the elderly and all those who wish to have easy access to the sea. Some people may not like the shallow waters-the visitor has to walk a long way into the sea to be able to swim-but the sea is clean and warm and the view is marvelous. How can we testify the sea is clean? Well, there are tiny fish swimming and lots of live shells moving all around. This place gives the illusion you are in a far away place in Corfu, not so near to town. It only takes 5-10 minutes to reach the town centre, let alone enjoy so many facilities!

However, those who don’t want to enter this space they can still drive to the right side of the Baths, right to the bare beach, and have a swim on the other side of the area. This spot though has only two trees and a lot of sea weeds.

Interview with Apostolos Patounis, the owner of the unique Soapworks in Corfu

The shop and soap factory of Patounis family are located in a central spot of Corfu town, at SanRoco square. It is easy to find since it is near the Dassia bus stop, on the way to Ionian University. Don’t expect to see something big or spectacular; it is a pure traditional place that is worth visiting as it promotes natural products. Both residents and tourists should visit it and learn all about the soap making process.

We visited the soap factory for you and interviewed Mr.Patounis. We met him at the shop which is the front part of the building. Behind the shop there is a huge, oblong room which is the actual factory where the soap production takes place.

Would you please tell us about this place?

This place was built at the end of the 19th century and still operates the same way it used to, while at the same time it maintains a big part of the old equipment. As a result, last year it was listed with the Ministry of Culture as a monument of Industrial Archaeology along with its equipment and use. This place is a live museum which is being visited by both Greeks and tourists. We welcome school visits and other educational groups.

Tell us about your family. Where did they start this business?

The first soap factory was set up in Zakynthos in 1850. It dates back to 5 generations! The soap business was started by my great-great grandpa in 1850. That was the first soap business in Greece, and we are now the last we keep on making traditional green soap.

The Corfu plant built in 1891, preserved with its functioning tools and equipment, constitutes a living memory of an old splendid local tradition.

Let’s talk about the soap you make. Any important details you would like to share with our readers?

Pure soap is considered the most adequate skin cleanser since it unblocks skin pores by effectively removing dirt, oily substances and dead cells.

The special characteristic of our soap is that it is being made from natural raw materials and the final product does not contain any additives.

Mr.Patounis is now showing us the inner place-the factory- where the visitor can see the production of soap, stacks of dried soap and the equipment.

As you can see, we still operate in the same traditional way. You can make your own soap at home if you wish. It is easy. It only takes one hour to do so. Here, it takes 10 days. We’ve got 3 types of soap.

• We use local 100% pure virgin olive oil to produce soap suitable for the face and baby care. This type has limited lathering capacity but it is distinguished for its mild action on sensitive skin. This is the Olive Oil Soap.

• Another type of soap is the Olive-Palm Soap that contains 80% pure virgin olive oil and 20% edible Palm-kernel oil. This is a mild soap with rich smooth lather.

• The legendary product is, however, the Green Olive Soap. It is made of olive pomace oil which contains the olive Chlorophyll and is distinguished for its disinfecting properties and wide range of applications.

The above soaps are made using only the basic raw material of traditional soap manufacture, (oil, soda, sea salt and water), with no additives.

I have a question about the Green Olive Soap. Why is it called Green soap-it looks brown actually!

This kind of soap is produced via the heated process. When fresh it is green but later on when it dries it turns to brown. This soap is practical as it is very cleansing. There is also the Green laundry soap which is very effective.

We noticed some tools on a counter. One looks like a hammer.

There are two tools over there. What are they?

The one that looks like a hammer is the stamp of the product. We stamp the soap bars with it. The other one with the long handle and the knife at the edge is for cutting the soap. These tools are the original ones.

How often do you have a production?

In winter we usually have it once a week. In summer, every two weeks.

Any other product you plan to make in the future?

We are preparing a formula suitable for the washing machine. But it will take some time. Soap flakes are used for aphides in the fields.

What else do you sell in the shop?

Apart from soap we sell items for farmers.

Corfu is a green paradise, but yet, working indoors can make you feel you are under pressure. But there is a way to alter this feeling wherever your office may be. Just read on!

Fourteen tips to an Eco-friendly office!

So, you are working in an office and feel you are destined to be confined in a cement environment for the rest of your life! But office life doesn’t mean you can not be in the eco spirit! There are several ways you can improve your working environment and then feel satisfied that you have finally contributed to a greener and healthier office life. It only takes a couple of steps and some determination.

Step one: Use your car less.
How can you do that? Arrange with a colleague to use your cars in turns or use public transport (which is the best solution as it causes less pollution).

Step two: Get plants.
Fill your office with plants. They not only enhance the atmosphere but also lessen the effects of radiation emitted from office equipment. Ask the florists about the best interior plants that need little care. Plants will also make you feel relaxed and happy.

Step three: Find the light.
Place your desk in the spot that is best lit. If there is a window, place your desk nearby as a source of natural light is always best.

Step four: Become paper aware.
If you use a printer, print on both sides of the paper. Waste less paper and contribute to less deforestation. Also, use recycled paper.

Step five: Ban felt pens.
Avoid using felt pens and use ball point pens instead. The latter contain less chemicals and do not smell.

Step six: Pins vs tape.
You can use pins or clips instead of adhesive tape which produces toxins and it is not bio-degradable.

Step seven: Save files.
Save your files on USB as CDs are disposable. In this way you produce less waste.

Step eight: Glass vs plastic.
You can use plates and glasses made of glass or china and avoid plastic altogether. Help the environment get rid of unnecessary waste that adds more pollution.

Step nine: Turn off your PC.
When you are not working, turn off your PC. Do not leave it on waiting mode. Save energy and lower your electricity bills.

Step ten: Lights off.
If you are the last to leave the office, don’t forget to turn the lights off.

Step eleven: Recycle.
Use the recycling bins near your office. Sort out the waste you produce during your office hours. Get in the recycling habit now!

Step twelve: Rest room changes.
If you run your own business, replace the faucets in the bathroom with taps having a photocell, and buy lamps that save energy. Also, install hand driers and do not waste paper.

Step thirteen: Charity aware.
Start a co-operation with WWF that has got special programs for businesses, at www.wwf.com

Step fourteen: Beware of snack packaging.
Avoid aluminum foil, plastic bags or one use dishes for your snacks. Choose a package that you can reuse. Why not get your own lunch box from home?

So, you see there are many ways to be eco friendly and enjoy a better office environment. It’s up to you to make some changes in your life and encourage others to follow you. Remember that this planet needs our co-operation to survive!

Water color display at Anemomylos

Yesterday I had the opportunity of visiting Anemomylos area in Corfu. Anemomylos took its name from the windmill that used to be there in old days. Nowadays, a reproduction of the original mill has been constructed that houses art exhibitions during the summer.

The current art exhibition of the well known Corfiot painter G. Zervos started on Wednesday 1st of July and was organized by the cultural and environmental group of the area. The water color exhibition will last till the 15th of July.

Opening hours:

10:00 to 12:00 in the morning
and
7:30 to 10:00 in the evening.

Mr Zervos has organized 60 exhibitions so far, both in Corfu and other places in Greece, and specializes in water color. However, he also paints in oil color and the visitors now can admire his unique color pallet in that medium too. All of his pictures depict well known Corfiot landscapes that are so characteristic.

His paintings show his apparent sensitivity in color and construction (he is a civil engineer)and the visitors will be fascinated by the variety of hues that he uses to depict Corfiot nature. The buildings he paints are in great detail and look like photographs. His price list is decent and caters to all art lovers.

About the artist

Demetra Kleronomou was born in Karousades village in Corfu and has been drawing from an early age. Her first studies began in 1999 when she was tutored by the artist Marco Bano and then continued her studies at the Art School of Corfu. Her teachers were Melina Grammenou, Spiros Alamanos and the sculptor Eva Karidi.

Demetra has taken part in many group exhibitions in Corfu and other Greek cities. She is a member of EIKE, UNESCO Piraeus and Island and former member of the Ionian Theatre.

Labatines

Labatines (small fires)

Tonight Corfiots can attend the custom of Labatines (small fires) in two areas of the town: Benitses and Mandouki.

This custom takes place on the eve of Saint John Labataris. At Benitses village, the women’s association Athena organizes an event at 9:00, during which two fires will get lit in the square of the village. There is also going to be live music, dancing and treats!

At Mandouki area the cultural association of Mandouki people organizes a music event at the bus terminal to celebrate Saint John. In this event will take part the kids of the handicraft workshop of the association.

According to the women’s association Athena, this special custom calls all the residents of the island to gather at a cross road during sunset to light labatines. In old days they used to make three stacks of hay and each household brought along their May flower ring to burn. The fires had to be three and always located on a three-way crossroad. When the fires burnt, the young people used to jump over the fire one by one, and they had to jump three times each over the fire. It is a great fun to watch and participate in this event!

Garitsa area, Corfu

One of the most picturesque areas in Corfu town is Garitsa area. It is a green spot starting from Alexandras Avenue to Anemomylos place at the end of Garitsa bay.

The main church in this area is the church of Iasonos and Sosipatrou, which has old beautiful murals inside and a special architecture. It is certainly a sight worth seeing. Many ceremonies still take place at this church which is very popular among the residents.

The bay of Garitsa has always been the favorite promenade for the Corfiots who stroll along the seafront almost all the year round. Summer evenings are especially suitable for a stroll at Garitsa as the sea breeze is cooling and welcome. The tavernas along the inner side of the bay, in the green park, offer a restful and delicious evening out from spring to autumn.

‘Hi,

My name is Snail, but my Greek name is Saligari, or Bobolas in plain Corfiot language!

In my family we are in a variety of colors; the most common is brown with black stripes. White snails are quite common in fields with eatable plants such as lettuces, cabbages and broccoli (the green kind of cauliflower). I love the rain and I usually come out for a stroll after a nice heavy storm or a drizzle... I have to search for food, you see. That’s the time farmers really dislike me. Why? Read on to find out!

What do I eat?

Leaves; almost any kind of fresh green leaves will do. I am not too selective but I prefer those kinds human beings eat as they are the tastier. My worst time is when I go out to look for food because I am an easy prey. Birds catch me, you know, as I am part of the food chain. People eat me, too, but not very often since some of them think I am too slippery and creepy for their taste (I have to become more disgusting if I want to survive, but there are still those who find me cute; can you believe it? CUTE! How can a snail look cute?)

Corfu and Venice: a cultural journey into the past

The small island of Corfu has always been considered a gem in Ionian Sea. The abundant green and its beautiful beaches used to attract people from all over the world, let alone its neighboring countries. So, Italian people could not underestimate Corfu’s beauty and strategic position, and claimed the island for the first time in the 12^th century. The first Venetian occupation took place in 1205, and it was during that time that a lot of significant changes occurred on the island.

The Venetian culture

The Venetians cared for the olive oil production, so during their occupation Corfu olive groves started to expand. Nowadays the whole island is still covered with olive trees. The Venetian culture affected greatly the lifestyle of the Corfiots who were at that time privileged to live in a higher level cultural background, in contrast with the other Greeks on the mainland who were under the Ottoman occupation. The establishment of the Ionian Academy is an example of the cultural influence from the west. The Academy, which was destroyed in the years to come, has been fully rebuilt and houses now a part of the Ionian University.

The Old Fortress

The Old Fortress is an excellent example of the fortification of the island that dates back to the Venetian times. This fortress has got a 60- meter bridge that links the castle to the square. Contra Fossa canal flows underneath and is currently used as a harbour for boats. At the entrance of the fortress there is the statue of Schulenburg who was a defender against the Turks. The fortress was first fortified by the Byzantines but the Venetians built complex tunnels and galleries to make it stronger. Inside the castle the visitor can see a prison building, the English Officers’ Quarters, the Barracks, the English Hospital and the chapel of Ayios Georgios, which is in Dorian style and was built by the English in 1840. From the top of the old fortress the traveler can see a panoramic view of Corfu town. The most picturesque part is that of the old town with the red tiled roofs and the traditional buildings.

The New Fortress

The Venetians also built the New Fortress which is on the North West side of Corfu town overlooking the old harbour. The two big gates of the New Fortress are still intact! On one gate visitors can see a winged lion. This is the Venetian emblem of Saint Marco. This fortress was completed in the 15^th century.

The Esplanade

Another Venetian aspect that is still prevalent in Corfu town is the Esplanade (Spianada for the Corfiots) that is the heart of Corfu town. Spianada is next to the lower square of Corfu, and this area is the center for all local festivities and major social events. The top part of Spianada is at Liston place, which is called the small Paris, since it was built by the French during the French occupation of the island and its architecture is similar to the one found in Paris. The unique lamps at Liston were made by the Venetians and are an excellent sample of the art of that period.

More cultural influence

It is obvious that the Venetians influenced a lot the local architecture as well as all the other aspects of local life. Education was promoted and many institutions were set up, such as the music schools which are still running all over the island. Corfu has got 12 bands today! Celebrations and cultural events still include Italian aspects and the local language has been greatly affected too. The older generations still speak Italian and many modern residents still use some words that are of Italian origin. For example, the word ‘alibreto’ is used to describe the half closed window shutters. Time changes though, and I wonder if the new Corfiot generations will maintain that part of their tradition in the years to come!

Q: Welcome to our page Mr.Sgouros. We are delighted to have you here today. Fist of all, we would like to know about PhysioPraxis. What exactly is this center?

A: This is a center of Physiotherapy and Recovery

Q: What does this center include? What kinds of programs are available and who do they cater to?

A: The center includes the following programs:

Athletic Recovery
Exercise and Diet
Exercise and right posture for children and adults
Exercise special for facing chronic problems such as osteoporosis, arthritis and other
Ergonomics

These programs cater to almost everybody, young and old.

Q: Tell us about the first program, Athletic Recovery. What is it about and who is it aimed at?

A: Athletic Recovery is for those who do sports. Many times specific problems arise, so there is need for physiotherapy. Of course, each case is different and depends on various factors. The program we offer suits the individual’s specific needs.

Q: How about the second program, Exercise and Diet. Can you tell us a few things about that?

A: In co operation with a doctor who teaches metabolism in the University of Athens, I teach the right diet and exercise which is individualized. There is a personal trainer for each patient so as to get the most of this program.

Q: The next program is Exercise and right posture for children and adults. Whatexactly is that?

A: This one caters to those who have a problem with their body such as a dysplasia of the spine, foot problems such as platypodia etc. We offer special exercises to help both kids and adults.

Q: What can you tell us about the Exercise program for facing chronic problems?

A: This program is for those who have a chronic problem of their muscle and skeleton system. People suffering from osteoporosis and arthritis will find this program highly beneficial.

Q: The last one is Ergonomics. What is that?

A: Ergonomics is the relationship of our body with any special physical activity, such as housework, our job, using computers, watching TV, using the car, gardening and anything else we do every day. We give advice to ensure the right use of our body in relation with its activity. This means you will learn how to use your body, when you do your work the right way and so on.

It is important for the people to know this so as to get tired less and achieve more; Also they can get more energy and cause less damage to their muscles and skeleton system.

A Banana Tree in a Corfiot garden!

I have walked past that garden so many times, for so many years and have never noticed that plant! Funny, isn’t it?

I was born in that old house and played in that small garden, but I have always thought that plant was a palm tree. It was smaller at that time anyway, and I was a kid-kids hardly notice these things. I was more concerned about my cats and chicken and less about the banana tree. But yesterday, as I was walking past that spot once more, I saw it. I didn’t have my web camera with me so I had to come back later to take a shot.

The first glimpse of that huge lamp- like flower deceived me; I thought-what is that, looks like a plastic lamp. You see it was hanging gracefully over the gate just in the middle of it. Exactly as a lamp should hang! Then I noticed a thick cord upwards that looked like a twisted wire. Looking up I saw the bananas; small green bananas facing the sky. You can see the pictures above. I had never seen a banana tree in blossom before. It is certainly a spectacle!

Menecrates’ tomb

Who was Menecrates?

He was a famous Greek sculptor who lived in Corfu during the 7^th century BC. One of the ancient sights you can visit on the island is his tomb-a cenotaph- which is right in the town.

The tomb should be restored and properly conserved but as it always happens here, it is abandoned along with the site next to it. Since the whole place has historical value-well, almost all the sites on the island have-the town council should do something about that. But I think they have run out of funds once more!

The epitaph of Ayia Triada

The epitaph of Ayia Triada church at Garitsa area started at 7.oo pm on Great Friday from the church and went around the block past The Douglas column and the Music School at Alexandras avenue into Alkinou street.

The majority of the epitaphs took place at Spianada, the center of the town where most churches are. Each church had its own epitaph, in and out of the town.

The epitaph of St.Antonios church started at around 7.30 last evening. There was a crowd of people in the town but the spectacle was wonderful-as always.

School kids take part in the epitaph of each church as well as a band or two. In the photo above you can see a part of the marine corpse too.

Easter holidays in Corfu

Today, Sunday the 12th April, the Greek Easter holidays have started. Schools closed last Friday, but all shops will remain open till next Saturday, when Corfiots celebrate Easter at the square of the island.

What will you buy this week?

First of all, FOGATSA, the special sweet bread that is the traditional treat for the whole family. Fogatsa can be eaten any time, at breakfast or as a snack during the day. In case you buy too many fogatses and they have become dry, you can slice them and grill them-eat them like a toast with honey or jam. Despite the fact that some bakeries sell fogatsa all the year round since it is very popular, now it is the time to get one, in a variety of shapes. Round ones are softer, small one-serving ones are best for the kids. Get fresh fogatses from bakeries (at a lower price) and from confectionery shops and supermarkets. Most of them are mastic flavored but the real corfiot fogatsa has orange flavor.

What else?

An Easter candle. They sell white and colorful candles for kids and adults all over the town. Kids usually get candles with small toys attached on them-this is the manufacturers' lure to attract more customers. Traditional candles are while with ribbons or wax colored natural candles. If you don't have time to buy candles now, pop into a supermarket and get some plain ones or wait till Saturday when you can get candles on the way to the square; there will be many stalls selling candles to those who like to get them the last minute!

What about Easter food supplies?

Tradition says you have lamb or goat meat in your fridge, to get it ready for Easter day.
If you don't have a spit to roast it, use your oven. Whatever you do, add a lot of lemon and oregano and let the flavor torture you till it gets ready! Olive oil is a must as well as ample salad.
Lettuce and cucumber along with fresh onions and tomatoes are ideal for a fresh salad to accompany the meat. Some people boil legumes or make vegetable pies-any will do. Some local -or bottled-red wine will complete the meal. Don't miss the olives and feta cheese on the Easter table! And the red eggs of course! Buy more than a dozen as eggs are tricky! They crack so easily during boiling that you may need a lot more!

What about home decoration?

Apart from baskets with red eggs-or colorful eggs- that you can put on many spots of your house, get flowers. Spring time is here and one or more vases with flowers will lighten up the atmosphere. Or you can get some flower pots from your balcony. The most enjoyable thing for me is to paint egg faces on hard boiled eggs! It's so easy to do, just take care to have a couple hard-boiled eggs(leave them to boil for at least 10 minutes).

Here is how to do it once the eggs are ready and cold.

Cut out rings from the kitchen paper hard card roller (the inside) to use as base.

Stick glossy paper on the rings or paint them with tempera or acrylic.

Place an egg on each ring and draw a face on it. You can use a pencil and fill in the design with
tempera or acrylic color.

You can either draw some hair or make a cap/hat or handkerchief to cover the top of the head.

Be creative! This is fun for the kids and all the family and a great gift for relatives and friends!

A strange fish in Corfu waters…

We have never seen this kind of fish here. The sea group of the protection of the environment club announced that they had spotted a new kind of fish species in the Corfiot sea. They stated that lately, the fishermen of northern Corfu catch frequently a new kind of fish that is called Sphoeroides pachygaster.

This kind of fish can be found in the sea of the isles on the north of Corfu (Othonoi, Erikousa, Mathraki) which is the meeting point of the Ionian sea and the Adriatic sea.

What exactly is this kind of fish?

Sphoeroides pachygaster is a fish of the Atlantic ocean that gradually came into the Mediterranean and keeps on heading to the east. The problem is that some of the characteristics of this fish are similar to the dangerous fish called Rabbithead (Lagokephalos), so the fishermen may make mistakes.

How do these fish look like?

Sphoeroides pachygaster is short and fat with an inflated belly, smooth skin, big head that end to a ‘beak’ with jaws in four parts.

A few days ago a Sphoeroides pachygaster was caught in 80 m. depth by a Corfiot fisherman. It was 39 cm long.

Coffee Time local paper has a new design now thanks to Vasilis Savvanis who took over the graphics and the format of the paper. Vasilis, who is the owner of Aggelia (see the first link in the side bar) magazine, and a new book publisher, has tried to give the paper a new style and status.

Coffee Time is a lifestyle paper that includes articles about the island and promotes businesses in Corfu. It has a free distribution all over the island and caters to both Greek and English speaking residents as it contains both Greek and English articles and ads.

If you are near the post office in the town you can get a free copy now. The paper is being distributed to central spots of the town and to all the major villages, such as Acharavi area and Kassiopi.

Carnival

Today, 1 st of March,
the carnival parade it taking place in Corfu town.

Some floats and a number of dance schools take part in this event which starts at 4.00 pm from San Rocco square heading for the lower square of the town.
In the photos above you can see the kids of a dance school that parade along Alexandras Avenue towards San Rocco square to meet the bands. A huge blue masc shows the name of their school and the little kids dressed in pink follow along with the teenagers who are dressed like police women. This is only one of the numerous dance schools that exist on the island. Gyms are also in favor these days. The Music School of Corfu

The Music School of Corfu is located at Alexandras Avenue, a very beautiful area leading to Garitsa bay.

Who attends the Music School?

Almost everyone interested in music! School kids mainly, since there are 19 brass bands today on the island and they need constant members. Young kids can start music lessons from an early age, usually from the third grade of Primary School. They are the most enthusiastic members since they look forward to parading with their band on celebration days!

Bands have also many adults who are experts on one or more musical instruments. During St. Spyridon processions many bands take part and this is a wonderful sight.

Musical heritage in Corfu dates back to the Venetian occupation, hundreds of years ago, and it still remains as the main attraction of the Corfiot culture. “Philarmonikes”, the Greek name of the bands, add to the island a colourful character no other place in Greece possesses.

The Music School is the main spot for those who need to get educated in classical music. Passers-by can hear violin sounds quite often, or piano songs and opera parts if they are lucky enough! The whole block around this traditional building livens up to the daily sounds of music that are a familiar form of local culture.

The new Town Hall

The new Town Hall building is now in L.Alexandras street, near my home.

The same building used to be the orphanage of the island, an institution that accommodated a great number of orphans, many years ago. Then they moved the kids to another place ( I suppose there were just a few orphans left at that time) and turned the building into offices. It housed the technical services of the island for some time, but the interior was in a real bad condition. It cried for renovation but it had to wait for a long time before the city council took any action.

Last year I witnessed a major renovation, at least on the exterior of the building. Now it is freshly painted and has got a new tiled roof. I have not visited the interior yet, but as far as I can judge from the new wooden windows, it will look great inside too.

Old mansions in the heart of the town

This old mansion belonged to Petsalis family. Mr Petsalis was the headmaster of the Commercial High School of Corfu (the school I attended in my teenage years), which unfortunately was demolished to make room for a new block of flats, and his wife was a teacher in the Gymnasium for girls of the town, located just a few meters away. The Gymnasium was later turned into the hotel named "Bella Venetia" which is very popular and cozy as it is in the centre of the town.

The mansion was donated to the Corfiots but it is still closed and has not been renovated yet. Around the building there is a huge garden surrounded by high walls, so no one really knows what the interior looks like. I wonder if this mansion will ever be used in any way before it crumbles down. Many people donate buildings but it takes ages to get them renovated and used.

Rain, rain and rain!

Today, the second of January, it's been raining since the night before. At noon though we had a nice dry spell that encouraged people to get out and do some shopping; not much, as only some local bakeries and mini markets were open. The chain supermarkets and the rest of the shops were all closed, even the pharmacies.

So it seems to have another day at home, resting or working at home, like me. Holidays are great to do a lot of things you can't do on normal weekdays, when you have to rush to the shops or pay bills. Speaking of bills, the post office was open as I got my electricity bill before noon. It will have to wait till next week though, as Monday is a semi holiday-the next day, the 6th of January is Fota (the Baptism of Jesus) and it is again, a holiday. On the 5th kids sing carols-but very few visit us anyway. Maybe because they don't really care to learn these carols or they are just not interested, since schools start the next day! Two weeks holidays are more than enough but the kids won't come back to reality without nagging.

Shopkeepers are looking forward to the after-holiday period. Guess why?

Corfu is quiet and chilly; some gray clouds show that snow will fall, but eventually the snow travels to the mainland and we remain with the overcast sky. The view is artistic but some people feel it is too much for them; you see, Corfiots are used to two things: sunshine or rain. It is going to rain tonight, though as the weather forecast says.

Sunny Sunday full of fire wood

After a stormy week we've got a sunny interval. This morning though we had sudden rainfall, but the weather is mild-not like two days ago when a tree trunk fell off in front of my flat!

It was after an extremely windy night that the tree finally collapsed, and it was sheer luck it did not hit either a car or a passer by! The bakery owner, who opens her shop just after seven am, had a lucky escape! Minutes after walking under that hollow tree, and as soon as she had reached her bakery in the next block, the tree fell down!

The workers cut down the trunk and filled two trucks of fire wood. The twin trunk is still standing up and I wonder why they did not cut this down. I suppose they are waiting for another storm to do the job. Fifteen years ago, another trunk-at the same place-had fallen down and truncated the edge of my balcony. The workers had come to collect the firewood but they never cut down the other hollow trunk. They always let nature take care of the rest.

I wonder: Is that called an eco friendly spirit?

A new Publishing Company

Last Sunday's celebration

The procession of Saint Spyridon, the protector of Corfu, took place last Sunday morning in the town of Corfu.

Corfiots celebrated the miracle of the Saint that happened in 1673, when a plague epidemic hit the island. Then, Saint Spyridon sent the plague away and the Corfiots were saved.

An old local tale says that as the plague was leaving the island, she scratched with her nails the rock behind the old castle of the town. The signs are still visible to those who sail around the castle. You see, the plague was thought of as a monster who had iron nails and huge strength.

The procession was, as always, great and colorful. It was a sunny Sunday, as most days on this island are, and there was a crowd of people attending the ceremony.

The Durrells in Corfu

In Bosketo gardens, at the lower square of Corfu, the bust of the Durrell brothers were exposed to the public for the first time. The Durrell brothers were two authors who wrote about the beauty of Corfu and thus helped people all over the world to get to know about this small beautiful island.

At the celebration that took place in September, Lee Durrell, the wife of Gerald Durrell, thanked the authorities for the great honour, while the representative of Durrell School, the representative of Louis Group who were the sponsors of the busts and the nature expert David Bellamy and Spiros Giourgas delivered speeches about the authors.

Sotiris Mikalef, the Mayor of the island mentioned the following:

“When the Durrell family settled down in Corfu in 1935, the two young brothers, Laurence and Gerald get extremely influenced by the island. In Corfu they discover Prospero’s Cell, which, like in Shakespeare’s Tempest, is a personal Odyssey of every man.

Durrell family has been one of our families since long ago, and I am happy I present today to the public the permanent presence of Durrell brothers on this island.”

The celebration ended with the National Hymns of Greece and England performed by Kapodistrias Band and a reception followed at the old Palace near the gardens.

September storm

Today there is a rain storm!
Big news for Corfiots who were looking forward to some rain after the non stop heat during this summer. Last evening there were too many mosquitoes in the town and my walk along Garitsa bay ended in insect bitten feet and arms! Terrible feeling, and it goes away only with some gel. Well, this morning I saw an awesome cloudy sky and I was truly happy (I know, people get usually happy at sunshine) and we all asked: "When is it going to rain?" It delayed a little bit, it was noon when it started and it is still going on with a lot of clatter that accompanies it.

Time to get our autumn outfits, and tidy up the wardrobe. At last school children will get inside to start studying as the schools have started too. This year it was the perfect timing, school and rain.
Today we have all enjoyed the rain; let's hope we will keep enjoying it in the following days too!

Art exhibition

Art exhibition in the old palace at the square.

At the Municipal Gallery in Corfu town there is an art exhibition that is worth seeing. Giorgio Turchetti, an Italian artist who is residing in Corfu many months a year, exhibits his paintings under the theme of ‘Kind of Blue’.

The exhibition theme is divided into several parts.

The first part includes paintings dealing with the Interiors, where the visitor can see figures, fruit and the artist’s room, all in oil on canvas.

The second part has got Portraits in oil and tempera on paper. The third is about Nudes, displaying intriguing figures that show the passion of the artist for women. The fourth part is dedicated to Landscapes. Fantasy backgrounds and soft colors are the main features of his work.

Then comes the fifth part with The divided self figures, where the viewer will find themselves studying asylum figures in oil and tempera.

The sixth part includes Recent work in oil on canvas, such as Venice, flowers and sky images, while the last part has got Sketches, mostly portraits.

Giorgio Turchetti was born in Rome in 1925 and at first he was engaged in scenography. After 1960 he dedicated himself to painting. His works are found in Italy and other countries while his latest exhibition in Corfu was held in Corfu Gallery in 2006.

The exhibition will last till the end of August and visitors are given a booklet free of charge containing the art exhibits.

Traditional costumes

My grandma in the early 30s looked like that. She is wearing the traditional costume village women of Korakiana used to have. This painting is in oil and the model was a black and white photo I found at my grandma's wooden trunk. Among her clothes there were some almonds (!) and her colourful cotton belt.

I also found a tall clay pot they used as a toilet facility at nights. Unfortunately, it did not survive long.

August in Corfu

Hot, too hot! The island is in a blaze of heat and sunshine, but the sea breeze is soothing on the beaches. A lot of tourists have come and wander around the alley ways of the town or rent a car or a bike and drive to the beaches. Today is a special day for the local people: The celebration of Pandokrator (like the mountain). All those whose name is Sotiris celebrate too.

The monastery at the top of Pandokrator mount celebrates God the Saviour (Sotiras in Greek). The feast (paniyiri in Greek) starts on the eve of the 6th August.

What can you do there?

Today Corfiots cook a special dish, fish and garlic paste (bakalaos skordalia in Greek).
Here's the recipe:

Skordalia (garlic paste)

2 or more cloves of garlic (the stronger the better)
2-3 boiled potatoes
olive oil
salt
lemon juice

crush the garlic and mix with crushed potatoes. Add slowly olive oil and lemon juice till the taste is good and the texture firm enough.

----------------
Fry some cod fillets (frozen or fresh) previously dipped in a mixture of flour and water, in ample olive oil and serve immediately.

Or use salty dry cod fillets, previously soaked in water (overnight) and fry them the same way.

Accompany with a fresh Greek salad and red wine.

Here is how villagers in Korakiana used to get dressed in older days.

You can probably still see some of them wearing the traditional suits in celebrations or in folklore dances in the village, but women do not wear traditional clothes any more. Times have changed a lot since the days of my grandmother Katerina (in the picture) who wore her village clothes till her nineties.

May is the month of flowers. The gardens, the fields and even the balconies in the town are a piece of art. On the first of May my son gave me some roses. They were so beautiful I decided to draw them the very next day. You can see the picture above. It's tempera on tinted paper.

Happy Easter!

Enjoy the local Easter cookies and 'fogatsa' sweet bread flavored with mastic.

Where can you find them?
In all bakeries and super markets all over the island.

Easter in Corfu started last Sunday with the big procession of St.Spyridon. Today, each church will have their own mini procession (epitaphios), and the last one will take place after 10 pm. and will get through Liston area. Notice the color of the lantern lights along Liston. Tonight they will be violet, but tomorrow they will be white again.

Don't miss the first resurrection on Saturday morning at 11am. People use to throw pots from their windows as soon the bells start sounding. Then the bands walk along Liston and the Esplanade playing joyful parts. The second -and major- resurrection takes place at 12 midnight at the upper square of Corfu. Have a candle with you and watch the spectacle. Fireworks are shot and waves of lit candles move to all directions.

Images that resist time

The village woman in the picture used to live in Ano Korakiana. She had a unique personality and lots of friends in her neighborhood. I remember she was amazed at my taking a picture of her-that's what I did first, years ago, and then drew a sketch out of it.

It was spring time when I took that picture and she was at that time looking after her sheep in a field not far from my village house. We used to take the kids there to pick up daisies and other wild flowers. She was making wool thread and looked so serene and lost in her own world. She was one with the nature. She was always wearing a gold chain with a cross round her neck. She is now resting at the cemetery of Taxiarthis, next to the field she used to visit.

The sketch was made in ink and light water color.

Corfu island On air!

Radio music is quite popular on the island. Walk into any shop in the town and you will listen to the songs or the commentary of a local radio station.

One of the most popular radio stations in Corfu is Life radio at www.liferadio.gr

You can hear live music any time you are in and enjoy a variety of songs from a wide range of eras. The producer is Dimitris Savanis, a local young man who has a talent in picking up the right music from around the world. Life radio plays 24 hours a day and each music session, which usually lasts for 2 hours, is performed by a small panel of young men and women who select the songs and comment on a variety of aspects from around the world.

Last weekend a new music session started at 4 pm, directed by Bill Savanis and Tatiana Soulani. Start from the central square of Corfu called Esplanade, which is known as ‘the biggest square in the Valkans’, and Liston, which is the road with the arches that was designed and built by the Royal French after 1807 and is located on the west side of Esplanade, and you will get to St.Spyridon road. Carnival in Corfu

Carnival in Corfu is celebrated on the two last Sundays before Lent. The festivities reach their peak on last Sunday when a joyous parade takes place along the main streets of the town leading to the square.

Several floats and bands take place in the parade along with colorful groups from local dancing schools and lots of dressed up school kids who dance and play in the streets. The day ends by burning an effigy of ‘king Carnavalos’ that represents the spirit of carnival.

During carnival time local people use to make 'galactoboureko', which is a special sweet made from milk and semolina, fillo and syrup and it is absolutely delicious! You can find it in local confectioneries, such as Kretikos at Saroco square, or Serano at Solari area.

Tourists/Residents: a new trend

In recent years, many tourists who visit Kerkyra (Corfu for the non Greek) island end up in buying some kind of property on the area. Some of them become permanent residents, while others use their new home as a basis for their family holidays, once or twice a year. But why choose this kind of tourism?

Nick, an Englishman, was one of the first to built a small cottage in Korakiana Village, on Kerkyra island. He first visited Kerkyra many years ago with his family, but it was much later when he found out that he could actually get a permanent place on the island he loved.

“At first I thought that I would need a fortune to buy a decent house in a village,” he says. “But a friend of mine, who had already bought a ready cottage in Korakiana village, kept me informed bout the properties sold over there, and soon he spotted a bargain.”

Nick has got a family of five, and they were all delighted at the prospect of a holiday house on Kerkyra. Nick was able to get a small stone house with a yard in front at a very low cost, and he built a two floored cottage in a year.

“When I first saw it,” he admits, “it was a kind of ruined store room with nothing much to attract the buyer, but the scenery all around was fantastic, and that was the basic point. We would live in the nature, breathe fresh mountain air and see a wonderful view every day.”

Nick filled the small yard with numerous flower pots with mountain herbs and flowers, and he made big windows to let the sun come into the cottage. “This will be our permanent house when we retire,” he adds. “Meanwhile, we visit Kerkyra 2-3 times a year and our kids come over in between their holidays too. We also let some close relatives to use it and some friends.”

Nick is just one of the four other residents of the village neighborhood. A few meters further on, a couple from Holland have rebuilt their own house and visit it every summer. Greek cuisine is renowned for its healthy ingredients such as olive oil, herbs and fresh vegetables. Olive oil is the top one healthy food that can get included in almost every single meal.

Have you tried cakes made from olive oil?
It’s worth giving it a try, even if you may not probably notice a great difference in taste-as I do! Olive oil is healthier than butter or margarine, so replace butter with olive oil and prepare your cake mix as usual. You will create a new version if you also add orange juice (or replace milk completely) and a drop of Greek brandy (Metaxa brand, 5 stars is the best).

Less sugar than the usual recipe and add dark chocolate pieces or sultanas to enhance flavor. The result is fabulous!

Fluffy and aromatic, this cake is the perfect dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth. Go olive oil then and stay healthy!

The simple cake recipe:

One bag of self raising flour
Half a cup sugar
3-4 eggs
One cup olive oil
1-2 vanilla essence portions
1-2 oranges (the juice)
Some skimmed milk or a yoghurt 2% fat
Half a cup of sultanas (optional)
One bar of dark chocolate broken in small pieces
Some brandy
A pinch of salt

How to make it:

Mix olive oil with sugar and then add the eggs.
Add the flour, milk or yoghurt (you can use both if you wish),
Add the rest apart from the chocolate.
Pour mixture into a tin and add the chocolate pieces one by one so as they are covered completely by the cake mixture.
Bake at 150 C (you may need 180 in some ovens) for 3/4 of an hour or until golden.
